Alexander Khoruts MD University of Minnesota Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition

Dr. Khoruts is a Medical Director of the University of Minnesota Microbiota Therapeutics Program (MTP). This multidisciplinary program brings together clinical and basic science expertise and has been one of the leaders in the field of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Some of the accomplishments include several firsts, including demonstration that FMT results into engraftment of donor microbiota in patients suffering with recurrent C. difficile infection (rCDI) and development of standardized protocols of fecal microbiota purification and preservation. A major objective of the Microbiota Therapeutic Program is to support early phase academic clinical trials for a diverse set of potential indications, including C. difficile infections, inflammatory bowel diseases, food allergies, optimization of cancer therapies, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Analysis of samples from these different trials provides an opportunity to study and develop the discipline of the pharmacology of live biotherapeutics.
