Ander Izeta PhD Advanced Therapies Unit/Donostia University Hospital/Basque Health Service Section Head

Ander Izeta BSc PhD is Section Head of the Advanced Therapies Unit at Donostia University Hospital in San Sebastian (Spain), the reference centre for CAR-T cell therapies and allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell (HSC) transplants in the Basque region of Spain. The Unit serves a total population of 2.2M, with >100 HSC transplants and 40 CAR-T cell infusions performed last year. Originally an specialist in adult stem cell biology, tissue engineering, 3D bioprinting and regenerative medicine, he has led a consolidated research group (Stem Cells and Ageing Group) for the last 15 years at the Biogipuzkoa Health Research Institute, which is associated to the Hospital. He has supervised 12 doctoral theses and is currently co-directing 4 PhD students. His research group has generated >100 publications and six patents. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Experimental Dermatology and Scientific Reports, and regularly evaluates projects from Spanish funding agencies, national agencies of other countries and Horizon Europe/IHI. He was a member for two years of the Legal and Regulatory Affairs Committee: Europe (EU LRA) of the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy (ISCT, 2014-2015). He has been Associate Professor of Regenerative Medicine in the Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Tecnun-University of Navarra (2016-2024) and is past President of the Spanish Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (SETGyC, 2022-2024). Currently, he is a member of the Manufacturing Committee of the European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ESGCT).
