Karin Balss PhD Janssen Pharmaceuticals Scientific Fellow
Karin Maria Balss earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She joined Johnson & Johnson in 2004 and has split her career equally between the medical device sector and pharmaceuticals, developing spectroscopy-based methods for a variety of products and applications. She is now a Scientific Fellow in Emerging Technologies, Manufacturing Science and Technology Group within the Janssen supply chain organization. The organization is responsible for developing new technologies for implementation in commercial manufacturing, including real time release initiatives. Her team responsibilities include implementing spectroscopic PAT methods for unit operations in solids manufacturing, biopharmaceuticals, vaccines, and cell and gene therapies. She currently leads the implementation of Raman in commercial scale production bioreactors for advanced process control and real time release. She also leads projects to achieve real time release for biopharmaceuticals. She has co-authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, granted three U.S. patents, and presented invited lectures at national and international conferences.
