PDA 120 Foreign Particulate Examination, Isolation and Analysis

Bethesda, MD
Ask a Question

Please note that this training course will take place in person and has hands-on lab activities.

This training course will cover the analytical approach and methods used in foreign particulate examination, isolation, and analysis. The training course contains both lecture and lab time, with an emphasis on the practical laboratory exercises. Participants will understand what foreign particulate is and why it is important to identify its composition and potential sources. Three analytical techniques will be covered - polarized light microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique for particulate analysis will be demonstrated to understand why using multiple complementary techniques is often the best approach.

Attendees will get hands-on training in sample preparation, sample analysis and sample interpretation using particle samples provided by the trainers. Participants are also able to bring their own particle samples to examine as well. At the completion of the training course, participants will have developed particle isolation and handling skills and be able to explain the analytical methods used in identifying particulate matter.

Upon completion of this training course, the attendee will be able to:

  1. Handle and manipulate small particles
  2. Prepare samples for PLM, FTIR and SEM
  3. Operate different analytical tools for particle analysis
  4. Evaluate different analytical methods for particle analysis
  5. List the tools and equipment needed to set up a particle analysis lab
