We are pleased that the 2022 PDA Universe of Pre-Filled Syringes and Injection Devices Conference will make its return to an in-person format on 18-19 October in beautiful Palm Springs, CA. And we are equally pleased to continue the tradition of being a part of PMPS’s Parenteral Technology Supplement.

Started nearly 20 years ago, in 2004, this exceptional conference has evolved into the largest global event covering the topic of pre-filled syringes and injection devices. It is built on a long-standing reputation of bringing to light the latest advances in the field. Attendees come year after year to explore the future of pharmaceutical devices, and how today’s advances are moving the industry forward.

There is no better way to share the new and exciting details of this dynamic event with PMPS’s readership than through this informative supplement. PDA’s and PMPS’s mutual commitment to highlighting the latest developments in the field and showcasing how new technologies, products, and devices are propelling the industry forward, makes this partnership an ideal and valued one. Together, we share with you the most up-to-date information and advances to help you improve your products and your processes, all with the ultimate goal of benefitting the patient.

I invite you to see what’s in store for this foremost global conference on pre-filled syringes and injection devices, and to make plans to attend in October.

2022 PDA Universe of Pre-Filled Syringes and Injection Devices

The evolution of contact materials, manufacturing processes, injection processes, safety devices, patient onboarding, connected health, and other technology improvements, has created a dynamic environment in the drug delivery device arena. Add to that a global pandemic, that resulted in unlikely industry collaborations and unprecedented speed in the development of new vaccines. The result: a rapidly changing landscape, with the potential for the increasingly swift adoption of life-changing technologies.

Over the two days of this conference, making its long-awaited return to an in-person format – industry experts will share their experiences, new developments, regulatory considerations, challenges, and trends in this exciting area. Case studies will illustrate how today’s accelerated regulatory pathways and speed to market will impact the future of drug development.

As always, an important focus will be how new advances will benefit the patient. The advent of many new biologic therapies to treat chronic disease has shifted the administration of injection from the healthcare provider to the patient. Patients are increasingly given new tools to manage self-injection. Throughout the conference, sessions will explore patients’ experiences with these new technologies and how companies are working with patients to ensure engagement and compliance with, and better outcomes through, enhanced drug delivery options.

Among the emerging trends to be addressed are the move from intravenous to subcutaneous drug delivery; innovative approaches to on-body delivery systems to inject large volumes; moving treatment from hospital to home administration; and hardware and software that empower the end user. Find out how connected devices are impacting not only the patient, but also the entire digital ecosystem. Get a preview, also, into how novel technologies, such as silicone-free and RFID-based solutions, are changing the pre-filled syringe landscape.

Speakers will also discuss mRNA vaccines, centering on how they will evolve, and improving the integrity and stability of deep cold storage.

A major consideration of this conference will be regulatory affairs and standards. There will be sessions addressing updates on the new ISO 11608 and EU MDR Article 117, along with an overview of international standards impacting delivery devices. Discussion of successful human factor strategies to employ, to ensure regulatory approval of combination products and/or medical devices, is also on the agenda.

No Universe of Pre-Filled Syringes Conference would be complete without the packed Exhibit Hall, where a multitude of manufacturers of primary packaging materials, syringe technologies, machines, and equipment, as well as service providers, will be ready to meet face to face to showcase the latest in product and technology solutions.

After a two-year hiatus from in-person events, there will also be plenty of opportunities to connect again with colleagues and peers.

Another highlight of the Conference will be the presentation of the prestigious Drug Delivery Innovation Awards, now in their fourth year. These awards were created in 2019 to reward technical innovation advancing the field of bio/pharmaceutical manufacturing in two categories:

  • Innovation, which recognises a new device, manufacturing process, method, or automation that brings value to the industry;
  • Partnership Innovation (supplier and pharma/biotech), for achievement in partnering to successfully launch or introduce a new product to the market or modifying an existing product to make it significantly better or scalable.

Nominees for these prestigious awards were chosen from abstracts selected for presentation at the Conference; award winners will be recognised during the Opening Plenary Session.

Excitement continues to build for the world’s most important event on pre-filled syringes and injection devices. This is the single best place to gain a complete understanding of the application of pre-filled syringes and other pre-filled containers and injection devices to drug delivery, and to get the information you need to tackle the challenges of both new product introduction and existing product support!

Make plans to attend the 2022 PDA Universe of Pre-Filled Syringes and Injection Devices Conference to ensure that your company stays ahead of the curve with the most up-to-date insights and innovations available.
