Anticipating the 19th PDA Pharmaceutical Microbiology Conference 2024 Bridging Science and Compliance

by Kurt Jaecques, GSK and Erika Pfeiler, PhD, U.S. FDA

As technology in the pharmaceutical industry continually evolves, the interplay between scientific innovation and regulatory compliance becomes even more crucial. The upcoming 19th PDA Pharmaceutical Micro Conference, this year taking place on 07-09 October in Washington, DC, will be again a unique forum for experts to address this dynamic relationship, exploring how cutting-edge technologies can harmonize with stringent compliance requirements to further enhance pharmaceutical quality and patient safety.

The PDA Pharmaceutical Microbiology Conference will underscore the necessity of an integrated approach to bridge the gap between science and compliance. It is not enough to pursue scientific excellence in isolation; compliance practices must evolve to keep pace with scientific advancements. This integrated approach will be illustrated through case studies and panel discussions featuring Industry leaders and regulatory experts. Regular dialogue between scientists, industry professionals and regulators is essential to anticipate challenges and develop proactive solutions. This conference is the flagship forum for this type of discussion on pharmaceutical microbiology topics. On the last day of the conference, we will be creating the opportunity to engage directly with scientific and regulatory representatives from the Food and Drug Administration during our Ask the Regulators panel.

During this year's conference, there will be several plenary sessions where we will provide the opportunity to gain perspective on diverse topics with significant parallels to pharmaceutical microbiology, such as the microbiological considerations in the design of regenerative life support systems (presented by a microbiologist from NASA) or to hear more about the future of microbiome-based therapies and its implications they might have for modern medicine. Participants will benefit from learning how these speakers overcame the challenges of a changing scientific landscape in their own areas of microbiology.

At the heart of the conference, a series of presentations will underscore the transformative potential of new scientific methodologies. Rapid advancements in microbial detection and characterization techniques for sterility, microbial limits and endotoxin/pyrogen testing will be highlighted as pivotal tools in the quest for better, faster and more accurate testing methods.

People who have attended previous PDA Microbiology Conferences will be familiar with our poster sessions and the exhibit hall, which is a perfect platform for vendors and stakeholders to interact with each other in an open and non-obligatory way. On behalf of the Program Planning Committee and PDA, we are really looking forward to welcoming you to this year’s PDA Pharmaceutical Microbiology Conference in Washington, DC! We have been working hard to identify topics and find speakers who will keep you updated with advances in our discipline and the ever-changing scientific and regulatory landscape.

We hope to see you there!
