In Memoriam: Joyce Bloomfield
Joyce Ellen Bloomfield, former PDA Board of Directors member, passed away on June 2, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. Bloomfield worked for 25 years in the sterile pharmaceutical sciences industry with the best leading scientists, manufacturing, quality and compliance experts, regulators and educators. As a quality and compliance leader, she strived to put the patient first in all her roles — as an FDA Investigator and Compliance Officer for the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, as a Senior Consultant to the pharmaceutical industry with Parexel Consulting, and as a Global Quality Assurance executive at both Cardinal Health and Merck, Sharp and Dohme. She retired in 2015 but continued to support the pharmaceutical industry as a volunteer with the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA).
As a PDA volunteer (2009-2020), Bloomfield served in numerous capacities: as a Board of Directors member (2017-2020), as chair of the Science Advisory Board, as co-chair, contributor, speaker or moderator of multiple conference program planning and steering committees, and as a founding member of PDA’s pharmaceutical quality metrics and quality culture committee. In 2017, Bloomfield was awarded the PDA Distinguished Service Appreciation award, given in recognition of special acts, contributions or services that have promoted the success and strength of PDA.
Bloomfield began her career as a medical technician at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, after earning her BS in medical technology from Murray State University and certification as a medical technologist.
"Joyce was a truly wonderful person and a dedicated PDA Member," said PDA President & CEO Glenn Wright. "As a member of the Board of Directors she was very engaged, always willing to step in and assist where needed. We will all miss her greatly."
